South Richmond County Suburb

Listings in Hephzibah, GA

Welcome to Hephzibah, a small Richmond County city southwest of Augusta with rural roots, a Baptist-founded history, and easy access to the Central Savannah River Area.

Hephzibah is a city in southern Richmond County, Georgia, located about 14 to 15 miles southwest of downtown Augusta. It is part of the Augusta metropolitan area and the broader Central Savannah River Area, a bi-state region that straddles the Georgia-South Carolina line along the Savannah River. Its roughly 3,800 residents live in a community that balances rural heritage with suburban convenience. The area was settled during the colonial era and later became known as Brothersville. Its modern name dates to 1860, when the Hephzibah Association of Baptist churches established Hephzibah High School at the community, and the state formally renamed the town Hephzibah in 1870. Local writer Walter A. Clark chronicled the community's early days in his 1909 book "A Lost Arcadia." For generations, agriculture and small-scale trade formed the backbone of the local economy, and farms and homesteads continue to shape the surrounding countryside. In 1996, the governments of Augusta and Richmond County consolidated, though Hephzibah retains its own municipal identity within the county. Today Hephzibah is a largely residential community with a suburban-rural mix and a high rate of homeownership. It sits near the Fort Eisenhower military installation, formerly Fort Gordon, which influences the local economy and population. Public schools are part of the Richmond County School System, with Hephzibah Elementary and Hephzibah High School serving the area, the latter the largest high school by attendance in the county. Residents enjoy outdoor amenities led by the 286-acre Diamond Lakes Regional Park, and Augusta Transit extends service into the Hephzibah area. For homebuyers, the city offers space, a quieter pace, and a short commute to Augusta's employment, healthcare, and cultural centers.

City Guide

About Hephzibah

Real Estate & Housing

Hephzibah's housing stock is notably varied, reflecting the community's long history and steady growth. Buyers find historic farmhouses on larger rural parcels alongside mid-to-late 20th-century ranch-style homes and more recent subdivisions. This mix offers options ranging from established homesteads with acreage to conventional suburban homes in newer developments. Neighborhoods such as Farmers Bridge and Cambridge are among the more active residential areas. The community is predominantly owner-occupied, and its combination of lot size, space, and Augusta proximity shapes buyer interest in the area.

Neighborhoods

Hephzibah's residential landscape ranges from older rural properties and farmsteads on the city's edges to newer, street-oriented subdivisions closer to the central community. Farmers Bridge is among the most active neighborhoods for home sales, and Cambridge represents another established subdivision within the city's growth pattern. Because much of the surrounding area remains lightly developed, homes often sit on larger lots than in central Augusta. The blend of historic farmhouses and modern subdivisions gives Hephzibah a distinctive mix, with neighborhoods connected by the major corridors leading toward Augusta and the Fort Eisenhower area.

Outdoor recreation is close at hand through Diamond Lakes Regional Park and surrounding county green space. The presence of nearby Fort Eisenhower shapes parts of the local economy and community. Families moving to Hephzibah benefit from the district's full K-12 continuum and additional school-choice options, with the broader Augusta area offering further private and specialized programs.

Getting Around

Hephzibah's location keeps Augusta within a short drive of roughly 25 minutes along local highways, giving residents straightforward access to the metro area's employment centers, medical facilities, and shopping. Diamond Lakes Regional Park anchors recreation in Hephzibah, offering about 286 acres with walking tracks, picnic pavilions, youth and adult baseball and softball fields, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, and camping near the lake. Euchee Creek Park and other Richmond County facilities add neighborhood-level green space, while Phinizy Swamp Nature Park and the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area provide larger outdoor destinations a short drive away.
